War and regional instability have severely disrupted the raw materials required to extrude and armor optical fiber.

1. The Root Cause: Why Are Prices Spiking?
A fiber optic cable is a complex mechanical assembly. While the microscopic silica glass core is the most important part, it is the protective layers surrounding it that are currently experiencing massive supply shocks.
Aramid Yarn (Kevlar) Shortages: This is the most critical issue. Aramid yarn is the tensile strength member inside ADSS and standard distribution cables. Because of ongoing global conflicts, the military and defense sectors have absorbed a massive percentage of the world's aramid yarn supply for ballistic protection. As military demand skyrockets, civilian telecom supply plummets, driving prices up aggressively.
Petrochemicals and Polymers (PE, LSZH): Geopolitical instability directly impacts crude oil and natural gas prices. These are the foundational ingredients for Polyethylene (PE) outdoor jackets and Low Smoke Zero Halogen (LSZH) compounds.
Metals for Armoring: The cost of Corrugated Steel Tape (CST) and aluminum used in interlocking armor has spiked due to disrupted mining operations and the energy-intensive nature of metal smelting during global energy crunches.
2. The "Cheap Cable" Trap: What Shady Factories Won't Tell You
When global raw material prices rise 20%, but a supplier suddenly offers you a cable at last year's price, you need to walk away immediately. Physics and economics dictate that they are cutting corners. Here is how they hide it:
Stripping the Aramid Yarn: If a factory cannot afford enough aramid yarn, they simply put less of it inside the jacket. The cable looks identical from the outside. But when your contractor pulls that cable through a 200-foot conduit, the tension will exceed the compromised yield strength, snapping the glass cores inside.
Recycled Plastics (Regrind): To save on petrochemical costs, cheap factories use "regrind" (recycled, melted-down scrap plastic) for the outer jacket. Recycled PE loses its UV resistance and mechanical elasticity. If you hang a recycled jacket on an aerial pole, the sun and winter freezing will crack it open within 24 months, flooding your network with water.
Thinner Armor: They will use a thinner gauge of steel tape that fails the standard crush-resistance tests, leaving your direct-buried cable vulnerable to shovel strikes and rodents.
3. How to Protect Your Network and Your Budget
You cannot control global raw material shortages, but you can control how you architect and source your network.
Stop Over-Specifying: If you are running cable inside a secure, indoor conduit, do not specify an armored jacket. If your aerial span is only 40 meters, do not demand an ADSS cable engineered for a 150-meter span (which requires double the expensive aramid yarn). Work with your manufacturer to calculate the exact mechanical load you need, and pay for nothing more.
Forecast and Lock In: The spot market for fiber is volatile. The worst thing you can do is order "just in time." Project your deployment needs 6 months in advance and issue a blanket purchase order to lock in your material costs before the next supply shock.
