Technical Guide to Cat 8 Ethernet Cabling: Specifications, Distance Constraints, and 40GBASE-T Application

Everyone is talking about Cat 8 ethernet cable like it's the next logical upgrade for office networks. It's not. If you are planning to wire a standard office floor with Cat 8, stop. You are wasting money.

I've terminated thousands of copper links, and Cat 8 is a completely different animal compared to Cat 6A. It's not just "faster cable"-it's a specialized, industrial-grade component with massive physical limitations.

Here is what the datasheet won't tell you about deploying Cat 8 in the real world.

 

The 30-Meter "Kill Switch"

This is the single most important spec, yet people keep missing it. We are used to the "100-meter rule" for copper. Cat 5e, Cat 6, Cat 6A-they all run 100 meters (328ft).

Cat 8 dead-ends at 30 meters (98ft).

That's it. Physics takes over. At 2000 MHz, signal loss over copper is brutal. If your cable run is 35 meters, that expensive Cat 8 cable effectively becomes a very stiff Cat 6A cable. It will drop down to 10G speeds.

Where it actually belongs:

Server Rows: Connecting a server to a Top-of-Rack (ToR) switch.

Switch-to-Switch: Short links between adjacent cabinets.

NOT for: Connecting a user's desk to a comms room down the hall.

 

It's Like Wrestling a Pipe

Marketing photos make Cat 8 look flexible. In reality, it's stiff, heavy, and hard to manage. To hit that 2000 MHz frequency, we have to use thick 22 AWG or 23 AWG conductors, wrap every pair in foil, and then wrap the whole thing in a heavy braid.

Installation headaches I've seen:

Bend Radius: You can't make tight 90-degree turns in conduit. You'll crush the internal geometry and fail the Fluke test.

Cable Management: It fills up cable trays fast. It doesn't lay flat like Cat 6.

Termination: You need serious hand strength. If your techs are used to UTP cable, they are going to hate terminating S/FTP Cat 8 all day.

 

Grounding: Do It Right or Don't Do It

There is no such thing as "Unshielded Cat 8." It's all S/FTP (Shielded/Foiled Twisted Pair). This means Grounding is mandatory.

I've inspected sites where the contractor used Cat 8 cable but cheaped out with plastic, unshielded connectors. Result: The floating shield acted like a giant antenna, picking up EMI from the fluorescent lights and killing the network performance.

The Rule: You must use Die-Cast Metal RJ45 connectors. The drain wire must be bonded correctly to the connector body. If you aren't prepared to do the grounding work, stick to Cat 6A UTP.

 

Cat 8.1 vs. Cat 8.2: Stick to the Standard

You might see "Cat 8.2" listed by some niche suppliers. Ignore it.

Cat 8.1: Uses the standard RJ45 interface. It plugs into the equipment you already own.

Cat 8.2: Uses proprietary connectors (like TERA or GG45). Unless you are building a specific type of secure facility that mandates non-standard interfaces, you will never find a switch to plug this into.

 

Final Verdict

Cat 8 Ethernet cable is an incredible piece of engineering for 40GBASE-T inside a data center rack. It's cheaper than fiber transceivers and easier to cut to length than DACs.

But for 99% of commercial installs? Cat 6A is still King. It runs 10G for the full 100 meters, it's easier to pull, and it costs a fraction of the price.
